Without Glasses or Daytime Contact Lenses

Are you tired of wearing glasses?

Are you tired of wearing contact lenses day after day?

Are you concerned about your worsening vision?

Do you live an active lifestyle?

What is Orthokeratology?

Orthokeratology, or Ortho-K or OK, is a specialist contact lens procedure that allows you to see clearly during the day, without the need for any glasses or contact lenses.

It is advance corneal reshaping technology. Like braces for your teeth, Ortho-K is like orthodontics for your eyes.

With Ortho-K lens technology, we design specially made lenses for you to wear at night while you sleep. These lenses will then gently change the shape of your eye in order to correct your vision problem.

The lenses are then removed from your eyes in the morning so that you can see clearly with your natural vision.

Ortho-K requires specialist equipment, training and experience and so it is a procedure that not all optometrists can perform.

Our Medmont Topographer is the gold-standard topographer in the industry which captures 9,600 separate points of your cornea for precise and accurate measurements of the shape of your eye.

Advanced ocular biometry with our Oculus Myopia Master is the most effective method to monitor your vision to give you the best Ortho-K experience.

The Benefits of Ortho-K

Ortho-K lenses can correct a wide range of prescriptions including short-sightedness (myopia), long-sightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism.

Most commonly, it is used for the correction of myopia so that you can enjoy clear natural vision throughout the day without the hassles of both contact lenses and glasses during your waking hours.

For adults, Ortho-K allows you to enjoy clear vision to live life how you want it.

If you live an active lifestyle or if you enjoy the freedom of playing sports such as footy, tennis, basketball and swimming or water-based activities, then Ortho-K may be the perfect solution for you.

If you work in dusty or dirty environments, or you work in a profession that requires clear vision without glasses or contact lenses (such as pilots and police), then this can be achieved with Ortho-K.

Ortho-K also allows you to enjoy the benefits of laser corrective surgery without the risks or high cost that comes with it. If you are waiting for laser corrective surgery, either because you are a young adult or your vision has not yet stabilized, then Ortho-K will allow you to enjoy those benefits now.

For children and teenagers, Ortho-K provides three major benefits:

  1. Clear vision so that they can perform their best for school, sports and their active lifestyle.
  2. Slowing down the progression of their myopia and in some cases, even stopping its worsening completely.
  3. Psychological benefit that comes with increasing a child’s confidence and perception of their own physical appearance, and social acceptance.

Traditionally, normal single vision glasses were prescribed to correct myopia but that is no longer the standard of care. There is a better way!

Ortho-K has been shown to reduce the rate of myopia progression by 50% on average. It is considered the ‘gold standard’ for treating myopia and its progression.

This means that it is now possible to avoid high levels of myopia if treatment is started early, so that children and teenagers can have healthier eyes throughout their lifetime with less complications that come with high myopia.

With the recent Covid-19 pandemic and its impact on remote-learning for school children, studies have shown a large increase in the levels of myopia in children across the world.

Our experience and other myopia-control practitioners have found that children on Ortho-K treatment did not experience such rapid changes.

Who Can Wear Ortho-K?

Ortho-K can be effective for anyone that requires vision correction and wishes to enjoy the freedom of not wearing glasses or contact lenses during the daytime. There are many benefits to wearing Ortho-K lenses as mentioned above.

As Ortho-K can correct a wide range of prescriptions, most prescriptions are suitable. Generally, Ortho-K can safely correct up to –6.00 dioptres of myopia and –1.75 dioptres of astigmatism. It is possible to correct higher prescriptions for some people and this will depend on your individual eye shape and precise measurements. A full comprehensive eye examination with us can help determine if you are suitable for Ortho-K.

Ortho-K is especially beneficial for children. For children, the ideal age to start wearing Ortho-K lenses is six to less-than-nine years of age. Starting Ortho-K treatment at a young age is the best time as this halves the risk for rapid deterioration of their myopia.

For older children and adolescents, starting Ortho-K as soon as myopia develops can also give them these same benefits.

Children can achieve fantastic results with Ortho-K lenses, so that they can enjoy their childhood freely.
